Erin Keating, executive analyst at Cox Automotive, explains, "The $20,000 vehicle is now mostly extinct, and many price-conscious buyers are sidelined or cruising in the used-vehicle market. Today’s auto market is being driven by wealthier households who have access to capital, good loan rates, and are propping up the higher end of the market."
Despite the 25% tariffs on most imported cars and parts, the market hasn't seen a dramatic price hike yet. Americans bought cars in March before the tariffs, reducing demand later and preventing automakers from raising prices. Experts predict that prices will likely increase when 2026 models hit dealer lots, but not enough to cover the billions in tariff costs.
