Luke Browning Drives FW47 in Abu Dhabi FP1 and Young Driver Test | Williams Racing F1 (2025)

In an exciting development that highlights the bright future of rising racing stars, Luke Browning will take the wheel during the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix's first free practice session and participate in the season-ending Young Driver Test. But here's where it gets controversial—this opportunity comes amidst a fierce contest for the Formula 2 championship, illustrating how young talent is being showcased alongside intense on-track battles.

Atlassian Williams Racing proudly announces that Luke Browning, a key member of the Williams Racing Academy, will share the cockpit of Alex Albon’s FW47 during FP1 at the 2025 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Additionally, Browning will be involved in the team’s preparations for the upcoming 2026 season through the final test of the year.

Luke’s journey with Williams Racing began in April 2023, following an outstanding performance in 2022 where he claimed victory in the GB3 Championship and was honored as the Autosport BRDC Young Driver of the Year. Since then, his momentum has only grown. He clinched victory at the Macau Grand Prix in 2023—an incredibly prestigious race often seen as a stepping stone to Formula 1—where he also secured pole position and set the fastest lap in the race. His 2024 FIA Formula 3 campaign was equally impressive, finishing third overall, with two race wins—including a notable win in Monaco—and a podium result at the iconic street circuit.

Luke has already had his first taste of F1 machinery, having driven the FW47 during FP1 sessions at the Bahrain and Mexico City Grands Prix, capturing valuable experience and exposure at the highest level of motorsport.

Following the announcement, Luke shared his enthusiasm: “This weekend in Abu Dhabi promises to be unforgettable—racing for the F2 title while also getting behind the wheel of the FW47 again. It’s a challenge I truly look forward to.” He added, “The Young Driver Test is a great opportunity to help the team prepare for 2026 and to be part of a Formula 1 event once more this season. Huge thanks to everyone at the driver academy and Williams for trusting me once again.”

In line with Williams’ longstanding tradition of nurturing young drivers, Luke has frequently participated in testing previous F1 cars and simulator work, all aimed at paving his way toward the sport’s elite. Despite focusing on his F2 campaign—which has him in a tight battle for the championship with just two races remaining—he has managed to balance this with his development activities.

Luke achieved his first F2 victory at Monza in the feature race, a result that marked a key milestone in his racing journey.

Sven Smeets, Sporting Director at Atlassian Williams Racing, expressed strong belief in his talent: “Luke continues to impress us with his rapid progression. We’re eager to see him finish the season behind the wheel of the FW47.” He emphasized the importance of offering such opportunities: “Williams Racing has an exceptionally talented driver academy, and it’s vital that we provide these young drivers chances to grow. The final few sessions are perfect opportunities for Luke to learn from Alex and Carlos, gain a deeper understanding of our team’s operations, and prepare for a promising future in Formula 1.”
